you-make-me-wander:

To celebrate the Fanfiction Writers Appreciation Day on August 21st, and following this post, here’s what you can do to show your favorite fanfiction writers how grateful you are for their work!

Whether you are just a reader or a writer as well, on August 21st:

  • Go on AO3, FF.net, Wattpad or any other fanfiction website, even Tumblr, and leave comments on your favorite fics. It doesn’t matter if you’ve already reviewed them, just do it again. It doesn’t even have to be a long comment, just show your appreciation. Tell the writers how much you love their fics. Let them know what they mean to you.
  • Since you’re there, give kudos, favorite their fics, vote, like them.
  • Send your favorite writers an encouraging message. Tell them how much you love their work. Tell them which of their fics is your favorite and why. Tell them why they’re important to you.
  • Make a post recommending some of your favorite fics to your followers so that they have a chance to read them as well and share them with others. Spread the word.

Make this a very special day for your favorite writers, but remember to nurture them often. They spend countless hours working on plots, developing characters and creating worlds that wouldn’t exist if it weren’t for them. And they do it for free, of their own accord and frequently during their free time. It takes hard work and commitment and love for what they’re doing. And they do it for them just as much as they do it for you, so appreciate it.

They give you infinite ways in which your favorite characters find love, go on adventures and get to experience different lives, new challenges. They give you unimaginable versions of your favorite stories that you’ll just never get to see in the official storyline. They give you the opportunity to fall in love with your favorite characters all over again. Be grateful for that and don’t be afraid to express it.

Show your favorite writers how much you appreciate them and you might just make their day. And a writer who knows that their work is loved is a happy writer. Never forget that. Always share your love 🙂

I can’t stop imagining Jacob’s ~pene~ with his little weird voice… oh my…

(Ah, is it thanks to this confession? ;D)

This is problematic, my dear anon. If Jacob Frye requires nearly 100% of your attention daily, can you even imagine the trouble of trying to shut up his Pene™ voice?

Of course, there is one foolproof way to shut it up~

~ Signora Paola

Jacob stirred restlessly, shifting from one side to the other in his seat. “Yes, it is a VERY NICE DAY TODAY, DON’T YOU THINK?!” he wailed, practically shouting at the end of his statement. Whipping off his hat, he positioned it on top of his lap, and began loudly humming Beethoven’s 9th symphony.
“What’s wrong, Jacob?” she asked, confused by her lover’s erratic behaviour. She looked him up and down, from the thin layer of sweat on his brow to the pained expression he wore, and to the stiff way he was holding himself.
Breifly ceasing to hum, Jacob opened his mouth to announce that he was fine, but before he could utter a single syllable, a high-pitched squeak piped up from uner his hat. “Oh shit,” he muttered, frantically searching the sitting room for a pillow or cushion.
Curious, and concerned, she put a hand on Jacob’s shoulder. “Honey, I’m sure it’s fine… whatever it is.” With her other hand she picked up Jacob’s top hat off his crotch and placed it on the arm of the sofa. Smiling at Jacob’s obvious erection within his pants, she kissed him on the lips.
When the kiss broke off, she undid his pants, and out popped Jacob’s pene. “It’s cold in here!” it shrilled, doing an upright dance. “Warm me up, sweetheart!” it directed this final statement at her, and she nearly fainted.
Holding on to the sofa, she took several deep breaths before looking at it again. It had a teensy tiny top hat. Jacob groaned, and turned red when he saw how intensely she was looking at his pene. She stroked it with her hand, and Jacob’s pene got even more excited. “Oh yeah, that’s the stuff. I get RESULTS, Big Guy, you should try it someday!”

THIS IS PERFECTION. THIS SHOULD WIN NUMEROUS AWARDS. THIS SHOULD BE PLACED IN JACOB FRYE’S BIOGRAPHY.

I’m writing a story with two protags, and each chapter flips from one’s point of view to another. One is a girl and one is a guy. I’ve found a few helpful articles on how to write from a male perspective as a female author, but i was wondering if you had any general tips. Like, what would a girl tend to notice first about a person/place/thing as opposed to a guy. I realize this might be a “how to write my story” question, but I figured it can’t hurt to ask.

simplyoriginalcharacters:

I took this question to the other mods and basically, what it boils down to is this: none of us – male, female, or otherwise – have noticed any real difference between writing male and female characters. The idea that there’s some sort of enforced separation based on binary sex is a little silly, to say the least. Just write your characters as characters!

That’s not to say that gendered socialization won’t play some role in your characters’ lives, of course; they may have different styles of dress, hobbies, interests, etc. because of how they’ve been socialized in their culture. But they’re likely to notice similar things, and the things they might view differently are going to be a matter of experience and education, not gender.

Some of the things we all agreed that we notice upon meeting new people: their voice, their scent, their body language, their attitude. Some people look at eyes first; others look at bodies or the way clothes fit. Everybody’s different in this regard.

Really, truly the best advice I can give you is, forget all the advice you’ve heard about “writing from the perspective of a different gender”. Just write people. Listening to advice like that is a great way to fall into the stereotype trap and lose some of the depth from your characters, so don’t listen to it. Write the best characters you can, and then get feedback from beta readers of all genders and ask them what seemed realistic, what felt jarring, and what you can change to make your portrayals of your characters feel more real. That’s all you really need. Good luck!

I did things today! Also, porn vs erotica in the writing world

August 5, 2016

evagoldwrites:

  1. I now have a page to list my writing projects, both completed and incomplete. The page itself is incomplete because reasons.
  2. I finally got around to adding a summary for my novel Drops of Life!
  3. Still seeking beta readers, as well.

Alright then. Let’s get to it. This is a modified version of something I hastily composed for some forums.

Porn vs Erotica (A writer’s take)

I think there are many opinions on this because there may be definitions but we all hate rules and definitions. We’re writers. We murder rules and definitions.

1. Pornographic writing:

Porn tends to be all about the sex. Written porn is a lot like your average porn movie–a vague transparent story that results in naked people somehow via delivery man or sexy boss or a maid… anyhow.

In a writing setting, you see the fucking and you get to read how it feels. Not emotionally, but physically. You get into the headspace of feeling the touches, the wetness, the sensation of being filled and stretched… you get the picture. It’s carnal and it’s all driven by the characters being horny. It’s not about a serious connection. It may not even be about sexual chemistry.

Porn is about feeding a fantasy that is purely primal. You read it when you just want to get turned on and not worry about emotions, relationships, or plots that would disrupt the scene. If you’ve read romance, you’ll notice that sometimes the plot will literally interfere with a makeout or foreplay scene. This doesn’t fly in porn, unless that interruption will turn the scene into a three-way or such.

2. Erotica

Erotica tends to follow a sort of sexual journey. You won’t just feel the sex, and notice I said ‘sex’ not ‘fucking’ because there IS a difference. You’ll get the tumultuous emotions that come from the actions. Maybe there’s a spiritual component. Erotica tends to be open to interpretation, and sometimes there’s a focus on the actual writing, not just the scene described.

Erotica can be nothing but euphemisms or it could be filthy words, incest or questionable consent, but it is written in a way that leaves no doubt that you should be feeling some heat from it. You may walk away thinking:

What the fuck did I just read and why did it turn me on?

How do I feel about that?

Who am I now?

Erotica can have a literary component. This comes in when the writing transcends the actions. The words and possibly the sex or sensual scenes described can be aesthetically pleasing so that your mind and body are stimulated together. Erotica is a different type of fantasy where sexuality is something to be explored, questioned, and evaluated. Usually, the characters grow substantially in how their sexuality awakens.

Sadly, there are readers AND writers out there that judge anything with written sex (as opposed to an inference and fade-to-black) as porn. These tend to be the same people that judge romance as fluff. The truth is that if anything, these labels are subjective. Some think that vanilla sex is fine, but polyamory or anything that could be labeled as a kink or fetish is ‘porn.’ Others misunderstand erotica and think it’s the hardcore version of romance.

In the end, they are just labels. The genres that exist to push marketing are infuriating boundaries to most writers, and I’m sure readers are confused as well. There are books labeled as plain fiction with more gratuitous sex than some romance and erotica novels, after all.

It’s from a little smut writing guide I put together for the benefit of myself and a couple of my other friends on livejournal an eternity and a half ago when I still used livejournal.
