To our valued patrons,

We’re still in the process of making an official announcement addressing the changes that Tumblr did, how it’s affecting us, and how we are going to proceed. For the time being, our bordello is shared between two places: Here on Tumblr and on our Dreamwidth.

You can still send your confessions via our ask box and we will keep accepting your confessions this way until Tumblr decides to be even more of a dick and completely take that option away from us.

Because of Dreamwidth’s limitations, confessions will be posted there first. This is because scheduled posting is not possible at the moment. We are hoping that they’ll implement that soon, but at the moment the way we’ll do it is when we’re done editing a confession, we will immediately post it in our Dreamwidth communityThe confessions here on Tumblr will still be posted on queue, so they’ll be posted a day (or several) after we posted them on DW. Think of it as a “perk” for joining our community there. 😉

Molte grazie for reading and most especially for your support!

Love,

I just want to say how happy and relieved I am that you are putting in so much effort for preserving this blog! Many people I’ve heard from are so mad about the ban that they are abandoning or even deleting their blog and content, and that attitude just causes more harm to a fandom. I love this blog and it’s refreshing to see how much you’re willing to preserve it for us. The new Dreamwidth site looks great!

December 9, 2018

Molte grazie for your very kind words! This desire to preserve is really due to the fact that we’ve seen this happen before and lost a lot of good things along the way. Even if we all move on to other fandoms, I think being able to look back to our old fandoms and seeing what we did is a great experience. Yes, even the bad ones like the drama. That’s why I think Fanlore.org is doing the most amazing thing because it’s quite literally the history of fandom! I think it’s important that we save these memories no matter how seemingly frivolous they are (like confessions). The point is, there were actual people who imagined these and even wrote stories about their fantasies! People invested a lot of time and love in this fandom, so I feel that it would be a shame to just throw it all away.

Besides, I do love going back to how this blog started and seeing all of these confessions again. It’s a very nice (though time-consuming) throwback. 😁

To our valued patrons,

I have set up a mirror site at Dreamwidth for both security and posterity. If you have a Dreamwidth account, you are very free to join! If you don’t have one, signups are totally free. ❤️That said, you don’t need to do those things if you don’t want to! The mirror site is a precaution in case Tumblr digs itself even deeper and alienates fandoms as a whole.

We hope that our account at DW will stay as a mirror site because despite Tumblr’s infuriating stance on adult content, we have grown quite attached to our home here. We will stay here until that time comes when fandoms find a new (and better) place to seek shelter in. That was the case with LiveJournal in the past. Dreamwidth was actually formed because of LJ’s increasing hostility against fandom. I thought back then that DW would replace LJ, but then there was this talk about a cool new site called Tumblr, how fandoms were slowly settling in there, and…..

Here we are. If there’s one thing I learned from the multiple attempts to quash adult content and harming fandoms in the process, it’s how fandoms are very resilient. Only time will tell which would be the next social media platform that fandoms will choose, but it’s inevitable. And hopefully, this bordello will keep living on and we will all see you there. 💖😘

A sort of bad news, our dear patrons: We cannot backdate entries in DW communities, so using the community as an archive cannot be done. However, we do have another account that serves as the ‘crossposter’ of confessions in our DW community, and since it is a personal account, backdating entries there is totally possible.

So, now I’ve taken up the task of very slooooowly adding all of your confessions. Every. Single. One. Given that we have probably 3,000 confessions (our Tumblr backup has given us over 9,000 entries but a huge chunk of that is likely reblogs and other non-confession posts), this archiving will take a while. 😓

On the bright side, though: I need not worry about any future confessions since they will all be crossposted!

Now, you may be thinking: I’m doing too much for something that may never happen (deletion of this blog). That may be true, but I’d rather be safe than sorry. Through the 5 years this bordello has been operating, it has amassed quite a lot of delightful and imaginative confessions, and I want to save them. There’s also quite a number of non-confession posts that I want to preserve, such as this audio post of Paul Amos reading a Jacob confession (GOOD TIMES WERE HAD AHHH). So, if nothing else, saving these wonderful memories elsewhere would give us a peace of mind. ❤️

An Open Letter to Tumblr about the Adult Content Ban and How it is Hurting Your Users:

December 7, 2018

thelogicalloganipus:

Recently, Tumblr was removed from the Apple app store due to an incident involving child pornography. This incident is incredibly unfortunate, but it doesn’t stand alone. Tumblr was also removed from the app store due to the large influx of porn bots and pornographic spam, users claiming to be proud to be pedophiles, blatant Nazism, racists who are not deleted for sending hate and harassing users, and more. I myself reported someone for harassing me, but because I had blocked the person and couldn’t access the messages where they harassed me, they were still able to send me anonymous asks. Your support staff, with back doors to the website (presumably), claimed they could not access the messages, and I was left SOL. Many features on this website do nothing to actually protect your users from harassment, racism, homophobia, transphobia, Nazis, pedophiles, predators, porn bots, and more.

You claim in your statement to us that you “have been working on these problems for a long time”. This is blatantly untrue. Please do not lie to us and patronize us. We’ve been here. We’ve seen you do nothing over, and over, and over again.

We complained to you for months and months about the rampant porn bots, and you did nothing except add a report button on mobile which only reported sensitive content or spam at best. You could have addressed this problem with an effective algorithm, but you did not. We complained to you about being harassed and sent hate speech for being LGBT+, and you did nothing. We complained to you about blogs being randomly deleted, and sometimes you’ve restored them, other times you have not. We complained to you that there were people proudly claiming to be “Minor Attracted Persons”, or pedophiles, and you did nothing. We complained to you about people proudly claiming to be white supremacists, and you did nothing. All of these things are “against the community guidelines”, and yet over and over, you have not found effective ways to handle these problems or suppress the feeling of welcome that these users claim to get here. You have had a long time to work on these problems, but you haven’t addressed them. To say you have is untrue.

Multiple other social networking websites, such as WordPress, Facebook, Instagram, Pinterest, and others have effectively dealt with rampant pornography, racism, pedophilia, and other problems without causing massive issues for their users who are not misusing the platform. They are continuing to find new, effective ways to deal with these issues without causing problems for their userbase as a whole.  There is no reason that you are unable to do this effectively other than that you wanted to do it quickly. You have once again chosen your stock holders over your users. And we have had enough.

You have already started to ban “Adult” content with a new algorithm. Here are screenshots of just a fraction of the posts you have flagged as containing adult content:

Your new system of simply tackling everything at once is not working. At all. And each of these screenshots is proof of your utter incompetence. None of these posts contain pornographic acts, “female nipples”, or any community violation of any kind.

We, the users, have been asking you for months to deal with these problems – particularly, the porn bots and bots that spam. In order to block a bot from a side blog, I have to do it manually, even though they are in my side blog’s feed. This is a huge issue for mobile – only users. They keep cropping up in droves, taking over our posts and tricking google into making it look like a legitimate blog linked to a pornographic website. We have complained to you for months and months now, and your solution to simply “ban all adult content” is ineffective. I agree that children should not be able to access pornography – but this is not how you tackle a porn bot problem. Your system is utterly useless, allows for racists, pedophiles, porn bots, and Nazis to remain untouched. It also harms sex workers and real people who may use this website for some forms of adult content responsibly. Moreover, as seen above, it harms plenty of users who have in no way violated your terms of service.

If you keep this up, you threaten your website and company as a whole. Many of us are backing up our blogs and planning places to go to.

You already have a content filter for “sensitive” content (content inappropriate for younger viewers). You could have improved this, instead of attacking your entire user base. It seems to be a very lazy “solution”, if you could call it one at all, and one that harms your entire userbase.

If you are going to keep this filter in place and make Tumblr, a website that has never been known for being family friendly and has never claimed to be, you are going to lose millions of your users. We are already planning our exodus. It isn’t hard to follow. Censor us, and we will go somewhere else. That is not a threat. It is a promise.

Sincerely,

The users of your website.

@staff @support

They flagged this post immediately and I’ve submitted it for review… this is… quite a week.

If you believe these words, reblog it, please. I want this to be right in their face because I couldn’t email them directly.

Even though we think we are safe, we are seriously considering moving our content to Dreamwidth. It may not be as mobile-friendly as Tumblr (it’s running on LiveJournal’s source code), but if there’s one thing that old LiveJournal did right, it’s how it featured community administration and discussion.

Even if the bordello doesn’t get purged, we are thinking ahead and planning to double-post our entries there. The only problem is importing literally thousands of entries since 2013. It’ll be a pain, but we think it can be done.

Henry’s birthday (December 7) is coming up soon! If you have any birthday-related confessions, please submit them now.

December 3, 2018

As I stated here and here, we have two options. One is we use WordPress and have it hosted on our own server and two, we use Pillowfort. At the moment, the first option seems to be the better one since the latter is still on its beta stages. Instagram seems like another good option, but I need to study their guidelines.

I’m thinking of disabling confession submissions next week while we move our content elsewhere. I’m still holding out hope that Tumblr won’t kick this blog out completely since it’s a fandom blog first and foremost, and it’s actually really unfair that they would lump this confessions blog with the actual hardcore porn blogs out there, but what can you do. 😑We’re using their service for free so we’re beholden to their guidelines whether we like them or not.

Another thing I’m thinking about is how we’re going to accept confessions. We will keep you posted regarding new updates.

To the anon who gave us a multi-part Haytham confession, we sadly only got 5 of your intended 7 parts. Can you please resend your last two parts again? It seems that Tumblr has never found a way to fix its tendency to gobble up messages 😑

Grazie mille!
