During the 19th century perfume was becoming more popular among the poorer classes but certainly weren’t up to quality in comparison to the more expensive stuff that the rich used.
Men’s fragrances for the middle to lower classes included herbs from teas such as bergamot and orange peels, and also fragrances made from redistilled alcohol which could be obtained by any pharmacist.
By the Victorian Era, hygiene had improved considerably as people finally figured out that bathing was good for you (before they thought it was detrimental to health) but antiperspirants had yet to be invented, so people tried to cover up body odor with a plethora of fragrances.

I hope you don’t take this the wrong way, but you are very free to submit your own, amico mio! We know it can be difficult to write something that accurately conveys how you feel about a character (or a pairing), but we don’t judge people’s writing skills here. Some of our patrons would probably consider your request but as Sister Teodora put it – behind every confession is a person with their own desires and preferences. And our last year census results not only shows that a majority of our patrons are women, but they’re also heterosexuals. Some people can write in the perspective of someone with a different gender and sexual orientation, but I understand completely if most are unable to.
Again, I highly encourage our male patrons to join and confess! Please don’t be intimidated by the sheer number of our female patrons. We always welcome variety and more male-writer confessions. ♥
